I've spent the last few days going through old ProNet threads to see what everyone's wanted from a new Plugins directory. I've uploaded my notes below, feel free to edit them or add to them. -- Arvind

• Compatibility - a minimum requirement of:

  • Multiple License Types Available
• Plugin Manager XML file URL - based on Tim's idea from the ConCall (01-27-07) this file can be pinged from time to time to see if there have been any updates for this plugin
• Code Repository URL
• Bug Tracker URL
• News Feed URL
• Screenshots Gallery - uploading multiple screenshots which will then be automatically compiled into some sort of view on the front-end. I'm currently leaning towards a filmstrip view powered by a Lightbox script, for example. What are the views on this type of implementation?

On the actual directory, the following will also be available:

• A rating mechanism behind a Typekey/OpenID authentication to prevent fraud votes
• Recommendations ("comments") from the public - again also behind Typekey/OpenID
• The ability to "claim" plugins as yours and thus be able to edit them from the Control Panel.

Categories

The current categories on the Plugins Directory are vague. With v2.0, I'd much rather push Tags as the preferred method of classifying a plugin and leave the categories fairly wide and all encompassing. Here's a list I've been toying with, I would love thoughts:

• Antispam
• Advertising
• Text formatting
• Tagging
• Photos
• Widgets
• Webservices
• Feedback - a merge of appropriate plugins from the current Comments/Trackbacks and Community categories
• Utility - a merge of the current Programming and Template/Tag Helpers categories.
